Putting Environmental Monitoring Sensors in the Right Place

I have blogged before about monitoring the environment with Ravica sensors to save on energy consumption. Installing a simple temperature monitoring sensor and humidity monitoring sensor in the office with graphic and historical logs, will allow administrators to observe where energy is being expended. If the temperature monitoring sensor records temperature that is exceedingly low for an office due to overworked air conditioners, management can see the needless energy expenditure and recalibrate the temperature control settings on the air conditioning unit to proper, comfortable temperatures. Energy is conserved (which means money is also conserved) and employees won’t be freezing in their cubicles.

Temperature ControlsOn the same note, installing an environmental monitoring sensor in the right place is just as important as getting a sensor in the first place! Why install an airflow monitoring sensor in the corner of a data center when it should be monitoring for airflow next to the air intake and outtake on a server? That’s how you get demoted and desk moved into the basement and the stapler an associate borrowed is never returned.

Ever since I’ve been working at Ravica, marketing our environmental monitoring equipment, the entire facility has been having temperature control problems. Our temperature monitoring tools have been working profoundly well updating us on improper temperature controls, but since our land lord refuses to improve the temperature controls, there is nothing we can do about the hot temperatures in the morning and cold temperatures in the afternoon.

Our temperature monitoring sensors are placed in the hallway which is next to the air conditioning unit in the ceiling. Thus, according to this temperature monitoring sensor (hallway temperature sensor #4) the temperature is fine. However, the temperatures in many individual offices is quite high, making it unbearable for employees (like me) to work.

Placing a temperature sensor then in some of our individual offices would be smart to obtain temperature recordings in these offices. Our landlord can better understand the discomfort we’re in! However, since the board has already decided they will not recalibrate the temperature control system, it would be useless to reinstall our environmental monitoring sensors to acquire more temperature recordings.

Maybe you and your facility can make a more conscious and intelligent decision—install an environmental monitoring system with temperature monitoring sensors to observe the energy expenditure in your office or facility. Visit us at Ravica.com!
