Despite the fact that the obligation for personnel to enter data centers have been slacking in recent years, here are some tips on managing data center security; because it is as much of a necessity now as it always has been. Anyone entering a data center is either fixing something or they are a sneaky mischievous man or woman (SNMOW).

Security MonitoringOften facilities leave their data centers in the dark, not to discourage fearful people from entering, but because there is little need for staff to enter data rooms with the exception to see if it’s still there. “Hey Steve, is the data center still there?” “Yeah, Paul, it’s still there”. Principally, leaving data centers with the lights off simply saves on energy expenses.

Tip of the day: Security probes exist to negate the impulsion for Steve and Paul to check up on their data center.

Here’s how to Secure your Data Center from SNMOW

  • Set up security cameras to view both inside and outside the doors to the data center. [These cameras are even excellent in low light conditions and can be linked to a web-interface.]
  • Place motion detectors on the wall or ceiling inside the data center integrated to the security base to e-mail/SMS alert special personnel. [Motion detectors are dual functioned with infrared sensors.]
  • Apply dry contact sensors or security sensors to the data center door to report entry of SNMOW.
  • Time-stamped video capture can be linked to other sensor and monitor data, such as : biometric and smart card readers, infrared, audio capture, or network access.
  • Install biometric fingerprint readers in data center entrances/exits to allow permissions to specific personnel.
  • Implement door control unit in data center.

If you can take anything away from this, just know that any SNMOW can be prevented from doing no good in your data center. Learn more about our security solutions to prevent your data center from being treated like a public bathroom.
