Why Wireless Environmental Monitoring Sensors are a False Safety

If anyone is familiar with dealing with a dying smoke detector, they would know why wireless environmental monitoring sensors are a false safety. The other day, I suffered the annoyance of having to deal with a smoke detector on low battery.

Environmental Monitoring and Detection ProbePhase #1: The Low Battery Alert

Typically, when a wireless smoke detector device senses a low battery, it emits a warning sound. In other words, it makes the most annoyingly incessant beeping sound until its reserves die, or the owner puts in new batteries. That’s sounds all well and good, unless your situation was anything like mine…

Phase #2: New Battery Insertion

After I put new rechargeable batteries in my smoke detector, the beeping continued. Undeterred, I bought brand new rechargeable batteries for the smoke detector, however, the beeping prevailed. So onward, I took out the batteries and left the smoke detector without power. Yet the beeping continued.

Phase #3: Improvisation

Increasingly perturbed, I ripped the smoke detector from the wall and threw it in the closet leaving a horrendous hole in the wall. And wouldn’t you know the dang wires in the wall are STILL beeping. Now at this point, I was probably breaching insurance stipulations, not to mention I was in danger of dying if a fire should ever occur. An electrician came to the house and fixed the problem, but I had to live with the beeping sound for two days!

Let this be some food for thought: wireless environmental monitoring and detection devices may seem appealing, but who wants the hassle of having to worry about changing the battery of your security monitoring and detection sensor?

Ravica has its securityProbe providing power to the environmental sensors probes. During power outages, the securityProbe runs on a back-up battery for a minimum of 1 hour (depending the battery); otherwise a battery is useless. Our environmental monitoring systems can be monitored through a centralized interface online.

An environmental monitoring security device should be working for you 24/7 without the disturbance of low battery power. If your wireless environmental monitoring device dies, where will you be to put in new batteries?
