There have been many advances with technology with environmental control. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been doing extensive research with utilizing sound to dissipate fires.
Server rooms and data centers implement an inert gas to extinguish fires as opposed to using a water sprinkler to douse fires to prevent water damage on computer hardware. The method in which the speakers work is emitting a sound that thins the zone where the combustion reaction is occurring by increasing the velocity of the air. Thus, the flame is more dispersed, and making the fuel less concentrated so that it is easier to extinguish. It’s surprisingly quiet too.
The sound technology is very cool, however not ready for real application. Perhaps in the future using sound emitting speakers will be more efficient and less expensive than using gases to extinguish fires in closed areas. A sensor controlled relay can be integrated into a network between a smoke detector and the speaker to extinguish flames that occur in the server room.
For now, many upgraded server rooms and data centers use gases for fire control. These are usually set up with a smoke detector that sends a fire alert to a sensor controlled relay which triggers the fire suppressing gas.
Ravica’s line of environmental monitoring sensors come with an intelligent base unit. The environmental monitoring system is highly customizable that can be configured based on the operation. For server rooms, and data centers the BitSight 8 is used and it works with every intelligent sensor in the Ravica family. You can connect any of our sensors, in any combination, to monitor temperature, humidity, water leakage, airflow, security, detect AC Power Line Voltage, measure Digital Voltmeter, control relays, and many more. Our sensors include an integrated data collection and graphing package to spot trends in the airflow, temperature, and humidity. By daisy chaining sensors, you can easily expand this ten-fold.
For smaller operations, temperature and humidity monitor for a commercial walk-in freezer, a BitSight 2 is used which allows for two sensor ports. A duo temperature and humidity sensor can be used for one port with an opening for another sensor of choice like water leak detector, airflow sensor, power monitor etc.
