There are a wide variety of temperature monitoring devices available, so how do you choose the right one? While the practical considerations, beginning with both wired and wireless versions, are great in number there is no need to get overwhelmed. In summary form, this blog will introduce a complete temperature monitoring system that utilizes several environmental sensors for your project. For detailed information on this system and others visit Ravica.

What does a temperature monitoring system look like?

The most important aspect of a quality temperature monitoring system is the “work horse” or base unit. The securityProbe 5E Standard (SEC5ES) base unit will provide the foundation for this system overview. This is the basic version of a series, which take environmental sensors for temperature, humidity, water, fuel, power, access, surveillance and more.

This base unit comes with the following features:

  • Ravica iMX25 CPU
  • 128 MB OnBoard NAND Flash
  • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Port
  • 1x USB 2.0 Modem Port
  • 4x Video Ports
  • RS485 Ports
  • Internal Audio Speaker
  • Internal Microphone
  • 8 Full AutoSense RJ-45 Ports (Maximum of 500 Sensors)
  • 2x RJ-45 Expansion Ports

Once you’ve installed your sensor(s) and powered up the base unit(s) you will immediately begin to log data in the securityProbe application, all of which can be stored, reported, reviewed, and alerted on by a number of custom notification methods. It’s an easy plug and play operation.

Available notification methods:

  • Email
  • SMS & Phone calls (additional hardware required)
  • SNMP Traps
  • Fax
  • Switch Relay On/Off
  • Wake Up/Shut Down Remote Server
  • Pictures & Data via FTP
  • Custom Scripting & More

What kind of temperature monitoring devices are there?

  • Temperature Sensor (available in fixed length or custom)
    • Semiconductor, microprocessor controlled type temperature sensor
    • SNMP OID for data collection over a network 0.5ºC resolution
  • Temperature Sensor – Water Resistant Version (fixed 15ft cable)
    • Suited for outdoor applications or indoor areas with frequent or potential water exposure
  • Dual Temp/Humidity Sensor (1ft fixed extension)
    • Two different readings on a single line
  • Dual Temp/Humidity Sensor – Water Resistant Version (fixed 15ft cable)
    • Suited for outdoor applications or indoor areas with frequent or potential water exposure
  • Daisy Chain Temperature Sensor (fixed 15ft cable w/500 ft link capacity)
    • Enables data collection from multiple locations on single line
  • Thermocouple Sensor (securityProbe series only)
    • Measures -200ºC (-328ºF) up to 800ºC (1472ºF)
    • Available in both J and K types
    • Ideal for industrial environments
    • Great for low temperatures found in cryogenics and hospital applications

All these temperature monitoring devices can significantly improve insight into critical temperature fluctuations by providing real-time data to your workstation and/or iPhone app. There is also an AKCess Pro Server Application, which gives you full access and control of multiple sites worldwide from one location.
