Home IntrusionsWith technological advances, security monitoring has reached the home to protect against home invasions. In recent years, we’ve heard statistics and horrifying reports on the news which have instilled fear in many people. According to the website Home Invasion News, statistics relating to home invasions, burglary, assault etc are largely falsified. They also claim that FBI (and no one else for that matter) has no such statistics on home invasions or related crimes including burglary, invading a home with the intent to cause injury, or other insidious motives.

Despite the fact that no real statistics exist on the prevalence and incidence of these home related crimes (particularly where there is a lack of home security), it still happens. Many people who are interviewed for traumatic incidents say that they never thought it would happen to them. If it happens to someone, it can always happen to you.

Tips on Physical Security

  • The major deciding factor for home invaders is a home security monitoring system
    • These potential intruders do not want to risk even a simple security alarm where they could be exposed.
  • Often, intruders enter the home by using a ruse to get the homeowner to allow their entry
    • They will tell you that they were called to install cable, check a gas leak, inform you that you won a prize to get your information (bank account, SSN, etc.)
  • One of the favorite points of entry for invaders of residents is actually the front door.
    • Using a solid piece like wood or metal will endure an attempt to break it down (do not use composite)
    • Doors should be within an 1/8 of an inch to the door frame
  • Windows should be sturdy and structured so that intruders cannot finagle the locks
  • Trimmed shrubbery and trees increase exposure of intruders to neighbors or residents as well as lighting
  • A dog is also added security, as they are innately (depending on the breed) an intelligent weapon.
A few years ago, Southern Maine had its first snow at night. The next morning going out to my car I noticed footprints leading from the street all the way to my house directly facing the window where my office is– where I spent all night working on a college paper. The terror motivated me to make extra sure all the doors and down stairs windows were locked.

I went with an affordable security solution with Ravica with my first home since going through a company exclusively for home security services like ADT will bill me monthly. I installed security sensors the front, back, and basement door including most of the downstairs windows (excluding one that is too small and three that were facing the neighbors house to save money). I also have a motion sensor on the porch stairs integrated with a sensor controlled relay which automatically switches on the porch light. Since we live in a moderately close neighborhood, I decided no to go with the siren & strobe light.

If ever I’m sleeping, or not at home, I will get a text on my phone notifying me of a breach. Already, I have been notified of a security breach when a raccoon was in the process of strewing garbage all over my porch. Anyone else that knows what peace of mind feels like, it helps you sleep like a baby.
