Advances in Technology: Remote Environmental Monitoring

Remote TechnologyThere was a time when remote environmental monitoring was a cool, new technology. A few months ago, an Israeli student became the first person to merge his mind with a surrogate robot. Certainly a very sweet new technological innovation.

The brain network set up is very similar to the 2009 movie Avatar. The Israeli student, Tirosh Shapira was positioned in an fMRI scanner in Israel. The fMRI would map out the parts of the brain with blood flow which indicates specific neural activity or process. A computer then interprets the activity of the brain deciphering the commands Shapira is thinking (right leg, left arm etc) and then sends that signal over the internet to the robot in France! The robot would move accordingly to Shapira’s thought commands. Amazing! The technology applied in a futuristic sci-fi movie is in development today.

The idea of remote monitoring to apply web-based graphics and monitoring historical logs is similar. Records of the monitors can be viewed anywhere in the world online. However, while perhaps not as fantastic of technology, remote environmental monitoring still has its very useful functions. Sensors that monitor the environment from smoke, humidity, water, power, motion etc. are extremely important and often required for fail safety.  For security or environmental sensing purposes, sensor probes are place in data centers, corporate properties, server room–anywhere a disaster must be prevented or energy must be saved.
